The most reliable way to gauge a size in secret is to find a ring that your partner already wears. This requires a bit of light-hearted detective work. You need to ensure the ring you choose is one they wear on the correct finger, as our dominant hands are often slightly larger and every finger is different. If you can spirit the ring away for a few hours, you are more than welcome to bring it into our Hertford shop.
We can pop it onto our professional sizing mandrel in the workshop and give you a precise reading in seconds. If you cannot get it out of the house, you can try the paper method. Place the ring on a piece of paper and carefully trace the inside of the band with a sharp pencil. Ensure your line is as close to the metal as possible. You can then bring that sketch to us, and we can use our experience to estimate the diameter.
Another clever tactic involves using your own hands as a reference. While your partner is distracted, perhaps while holding hands or relaxing, try one of their rings on your own fingers. Note exactly where it sits. Does it stop at the second knuckle of your pinky finger? Does it fit perfectly on your ring finger? If you can remember that specific spot, we can measure that exact point on your hand when you visit us. It is not as precise as having the ring itself, but for a surprise, it provides a fantastic starting point that gets us very close to the mark.
Enlist an Accomplice
If the stealthy approach feels a bit too much like a heist, you might consider reaching out to those closest to your partner. Best friends or siblings often have this kind of information tucked away, or they might be able to find out through a casual conversation that would seem suspicious coming from you.
A friend could easily suggest trying on rings for fun while they are out shopping, which allows them to report back with a size. This method keeps the surprise intact for the person you love while giving you the peace of mind that comes with a second opinion.
Buy It and Resize It
